About Allen Bike Racks
In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.

Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.

2 out of 5 stars Returned - did not fit correctly   August 28, 2008
Kevin Schroeter (Seattle, WA)
Even though the manufacturer's website states that the bike rack would fit my 2002 Volvo C70, it rubbed against the rear spoiler. I chose to return it rather than risk damaging my car. Amazon's return center was gracious and extremely helpful in making sure that I was satisfied.

4 out of 5 stars Worked great   August 10, 2008
Mr. Jason R. Lesser (Salt Lake City, UT)
It worked great with a round trip of over 120 miles. The only thing that I would like to see different are some type of padding on the hooks and something to hold the bike tires, but other than those two things I think that it worked great with two bikes; it's sets up quick and easily, and it's easy to put away too - didn't have to read the instructions really.

5 out of 5 stars Just right bike rack   August 10, 2008
Evelyn D. Kinnard (Dexter, MI)
Allen 102S Premium 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack This rack fits my Honda Accord perfectly. It's very easy to put on and take off, and holds my 2 bikes very securely. Great rack and great price! Have just taken on short trips but have no doubt it'll be good for longer highway trips.

4 out of 5 stars It's a very good product backed by first rate customer service!   August 8, 2008
Language Doctor (Los Angeles)
This is a good product and well worth the money. Easy and relatively fast to mount; and it's a solid and safe carrier. Mine arrived with two straps that were not properly thermal cut so it takes time and some struggle to thread them through the narrow passages of plastic buckle - the straps hold the rack in place by hooking through car's car-carrier hooks (slots) underneath the rear bumper.

Metal parts are steel and feel solid - naturally they are heavier than aluminum tubing, sponge bumpers, however they are inserted into the tubing - they are there to prevent paint damage to your car's paint- badly cracked but so far holding- but eventually they will fail. This design is simple, functional, and it works. Yet Allen's Quality Control should be on the look out NOT to ship the product with minor yet annoying defects.

(8-18-08) Since I wrote this review, I had to contact Allen and request them to replace the defective parts with which my rack arrived. The customer service was lightening fast, no questions asked, in two days I received satisfactory solution to my problem.

I rate the customer service of Allen Top Notch, A-1, Superior.

3 out of 5 stars Is it secure on a CRV?   July 21, 2008
Stephen J. Longfield (Ridgefield, CT USA)

Although the web site and box say this rack is compatible with the new Honda CRV, it is questionable. The top hooks will not lay flat and are hard to get into a secure position. The only place to put the bottom hooks is under the plastic skin on the bottom of the rear door, and the instructions say they should be hooked onto sheet metal. We have driven about 4 hours with the rack on the CRV, and the bottom straps tend to come loose due to vibrations, making me feel a little insecure about the security of our bikes on this rack. It is nice and compact and folds up flat, and it is inexpensive, but I would look for a different rack for a CRV.
