1 out of 5 stars There are better choices   September 11, 2008
Z. Wright (Seattle, WA USA)
This is one of the worst technology products I have ever owned. If it is working correctly (a very big if), it has great functionality. It can open Word documents, receive email efficiently, and do a number of other useful tasks.

The problem is the endless parade of error messages, crashes, malfunctions, and data loss. I have seen -- no exaggeration -- at least 15 different error messages in the two years I have owned this product. Think Windows 95. Remember how Windows 95 used to manage to come up with a creative new and bizarre error messages and malfunctions, with new ones showing up even after you've had the product for years? This XV6700 is the same.

I have performed a hard reset (erasing all data, settings and updates) twice, and installed a comprehensive update to the software, but to no avail. The update reduced the problems somewhat, but they are still significant. The Verizon Wireless help desk has not been very helpful -- they always advise a hard reset, even though that has not fixed the problem before.

I have not owned many handheld devices, but there has got to be a better one out there than the XV6700.

1 out of 5 stars Utter garbage   August 8, 2008
John Hwang (LA, CA, USA!)
We got these as our corporate "smart" phones, and I ended up "upgrading" to one from a regular voice phone when its hinge finally wore out. I was stuck with one of these for about a year. Our new standard is Blackberry it is much better.

As a phone, these things are totally useless:
- touchscreen can't dial by finger
- no tactile feedback due to touchscreen
- buttons not proportionally positioned on the screen, so must look at phone to dial
- lousy signal quality, lousy voice quality
- no battery life, and talking drains the battery *very* rapidly

As a PDA, it's OK, except:
- screen is easily scratched or cracked
- mini-SD card easily auto-ejects
- stylus easily auto-ejects
- battery cover easily comes off

Being Windows-based, as one would imagine, the interface is clunky and it locks up very frequently, requiring hard reset at inconvenient times. But at least it syncs with Outlook.

On the plus side, this is a large and heavy phone, so it makes an excellent paperweight!

2 out of 5 stars So Glad to be Getting Rid of This Phone   June 13, 2008

After reading some reviews on CNET I was excited to get this phone. Wow was I disappointed. The battery life is horrendous, the screen is hard to see in daylight and phone reception is horrible. Pretty much everyone I talked to complained that their voice echoed and I had a hard time hearing what they were saying. While the WIFI is great and easy to use, everything else about this phone leaves much to be desired. I'm excited to get my i730 in so I can say goodbye to the xv6700.

Love this phone. It's been my baby for three years. I broke one on the ground by dropping it and got another one.

Have moved to a Samsung and am about to go back to this phone.

3 out of 5 stars Very good... but not "simple".   December 3, 2007

I've owned over 20 phones, from Blackberry's to Q's. So I can tell you that this is not a BAD phone. It's not perfect either.

As far as "locking up", as noted in a previous review, that could be caused by not properly shutting down programs. Windows Mobile is the real problem here, because when you CLOSE a program... it isn't "shut down". Many people buy this phone and use the various programs, closing them normally while never realizing that each program is STAYING in memory to later cause problems on the phone. To properly shut down programs (after closing them) you must go to SETTINGS/SYSTEM/MEMORY/RUNNING PROGRAMS and choose STOP ALL (or selectively choose which program to STOP).

I've not had any more dropped calls on this phone than with any other cellphone I have owned. This phone has great WiFi reception too. Better than some others I have tried (Like the Samsung sch-i730).

The full, slide-out QWERTY keyboard is excellent, but the top is a bit too close to the body of the phone, making it a bit uncomfortable to hit that top row of letters. Not a serious problem though.

Mini-SD slot works great!

Uses a USB cable that has a standard USB mini-connector on one side and the regular, larger USB on the other. You may already have a device that uses the same cable, plus adapters are VERY cheap and plentiful. You won't have to worry about an expensive cable replacement should you lose your original, or leave it behind and need to connect on the road. I always take my USB mini-adapter with me.

As I've said, I've used a LOT of phones. I still think the Blackbery is one of the most RUGGED and well built phones around, and would certainly choose a Blackberry over the XV6700. But if you want a nice Windows Mobile phone, enjoy touch-screen driven devices, and can handle all the features, it's not bad at all!
