5 out of 5 stars Truly a "Phenom"inal PC!!   July 11, 2010
Nicholas L.

I was lucky enough to nab this PC at its EXCELLENT sale price of $480 but be forwarned that the price on this PC here at Amazon seems to bounce between sale price, it`s regular MSRP (at $799) -and- being in and out of stock -I know, I watched it and had to wait a month..
After doing my homework and searching for a new PC around the `net for roughly 2 weeks you would be wise to believe me when I say that THIS PC is the BEST DEAL OF THE DECADE!!
I have had the Pavilion P623OY for 2 MONTHS now, and after successfully moving over from my old Presario (2002/WinXP/512RAM/dinosaur) I can say it`s:
1) 8 Gigs and 7200rpm HD are BLAZINGLY FAST!
2) Whisper quiet!
3) and stays cool as ice in the middle of a desert!

I give it my highest recommendation! For those who are wary of it being a Refurb, I suggest also buying the SquareTrade 3yr warranty as well- that`s what I did. But honestly (hopefully) I don`t think Ill need it!
I`m a very experienced computer user and I use PC`s for everything BUT gaming, that`s what my X360 is for. I knew I wanted a machine that would skyrocket where my old PC was failing and these were the deal-sealers for me:
1) Speed, speed and more speed. A PhenomII Quad core 8Gig POWERHOUSE! (I`m a fan of AMD)
2) Windows 7 Home Premium x64bit edition OS. Slick!
3) 750 Gig Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm HardDrive. Spacious!
4) Built-in Wireless Networking! a/b/g/n you name it! Even comes with a cool antenna.
5) Free Shipping! (at my time of purchase)
6) Plus, it`s not bad lookin` either!
ALL for under $500!? YOU CANNOT BEAT THAT!!

You`d have a *very* hard time finding a deal like this anywhere else. You won`t find Apple, Dell, Sony, Gateway, Best Buy or any other big-block store with this offer! After ordering, my PC shipped and was at my door within a week, ready to play, combat-ready and eager to be customized. If you are in the market for a PC that should last you a long time and has room for expansion, THIS IS FOR YOU! I only wish there were more of these available to go around..

It is worth noting however:
*This PC only accepts USB inputs for keyboards/mice. (but is standard VGA monitor ready)
*Does not support HDMI output to a TV.
*Ships with a pretty basic keyboard/mouse.
*Has an open/empty drive slot/bay under the do-everything disc drive, labeled "Expansion Bay".
*Comes w/ a 60 Day Norton Internet Security trial. (Renew fee is $70/yr. or something crazy like that, forget it!)
*If you are upgrading to Win7, bring a notepad, you have some beneficial learning to do.

** On the "Windows7 Richter Scale" (Win Experience Index)I was very surprised to find this PC scores as follows:
-Processor Calculations per sec. - 7.2 of possible 7.9!
-RAM Memory Operations Per Sec. - 7.5 of 7.9!
-Graphical Capability for Win Aero - 4.4 of 7.9
-3D Graphics for Business & Gaming - 5.4 of 7.9
-Primary HardDisk Transfer Rate - 5.9 of 7.9!
Your final score is determined by your lowest recorded point score, so it is very unfair for this PC to have an embarrassing "4.4" final tally. THIS PC HANDLES AERO JUST FINE! No slowdowns with full Aero visual effects turned on! I have no idea why it scores low here. There are no jitters, freezes or bugs here. Not 1 complaint after 2 months!

1 out of 5 stars Dead On Arrival   June 10, 2010
Captain Hammer
I knew I was taking a chance when I decided to purchase a Refurbished item but I read reviews where others had no problems but that was not the case for me.

I opened up the box and the first thing I noticed was that the case was damaged on one corner. This was no big deal for me because I am more concerned about what is inside the case. The second thing I noticed was that the computer did not come with a mouse or a power cord, it did come with a keyboard. This was also not a big deal for me because I have a couple of extra power cords and a mouse that I can use.

I hooked everything up and turned on the computer and it would not boot up. It had power because the fans were running but it would not start windows. Also, the CD/DVD tray would only open half way so even if the computer would have booted up I would not have been able to use any CD/DVDs.

Maybe others will have better luck but I would think carefully before purchasing this refurbished computer.

5 out of 5 stars Great Desktop PC   May 21, 2010

The PC arrived sooner than expected and was in perfect condition. It took me very little time to switch the cords from my old PC (9 yr old) to this one. I immediately removed HP stuff off the hard drive, but there's still a lot left. I was not sure what I should remove. Anyway with a 750G HD I've got a tremendous amount of disc space. This machine whips!! It opens FAST and I can open all my apps and leave them open, including PhotoShop.
The only complaint is that HP never says that with a Lightscribe DVD I should have bought special DVD discs to burn. Now I have 100 DVD-R discs w/o a Lightscribe capability.
The question I have is "Should I buy the 2-yr warrenty at $80 since I only have a 3-month warrenty?". I'll have to think about it.
Nice inexpensive powerful machine that I hope will last me another 9 years.
Note: It's now 3 months later and I have purchased the 2-yr warrenty. I used it once & talked to someone in India who spoke perfect English and solved my problem quickly.
I'm still happy with the PC.

5 out of 5 stars Great System, Perfect Value   May 21, 2010

System performs well, love the package of capabilities. Only drawback was that the motherboard has no parallel IDE ports, so had to get a Serial to Parallel converter to add additional heritage optical drive. Windows 7 is best OS yet (glad I bypassed VISTA). Built-in 802.11n is awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Integrated graphics sucks? No way.   April 23, 2010

You'll be amazed by this desktop on it's specifications for the price that you're getting. Just search up NY549AAR on HP's site and you'll see the full specs of it, but here's the bottomline important ones:
1)Phenom II x4 (Quadcore) running @ 2.66 Ghz
2)8 Gigs of DDR3 Ram (not so sure of speed)
3)Windows 7 Home 64 bit Home Premium Edition
4)AMD 785G chipset mother board w/ HD 4200 integrated gpu
5)Enough space to upgrade
a)for one 16x PCIe 2.0

I wanted to get an enthusiast PC for the lowest price but for these specs at the cost of close to $500, that's pretty cheap if you ask me. I'm planning on upgrading the 300W PSU to add a video card but as far as I've seen, the HD 4200 integrated GPU has done great. All Directx9 games like HL2 was a piece of cake running @ ~60-120fps while I was playing it on HL2's recommended settings (seems like a medium quality settings) with no Anti Aliasing.

I tested the comp with Supreme Commander 2 and I was intrigued that it ran at 15fps @ 1360x768 reso low quality even though the game still has the same performance as mid range graphics cards.

Processing is really fast and is perfect for the multitasking job. I haven't done any test for how fast it is but I've seen how the cpu can convert song files so quickly compared to a dualcore.

As for multi-tasking, this computer is perfect. I can have 20 windows open, surf the net, play my music and play my game on one half of the screen with NO lag. Memory is always fresh on the 8 gigs DDR and is not used as virtual memory (which causes severe slow downs usually) and as far as I've used, I've barely even used over 3 gigs of memory. At least I have the confidence that the system is ready for future programming and use.

Overall, the system is the best bang for the buck PC that you can get.
