Product Description
Perhaps the most irreverent of all Park Chan Wook films, I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK is a delight for the eyes, and much more than a simple romantic comedy. It features the usual stylish innuendo and eye-grabbing visuals of Park's past works, but with a markedly different, more light-hearted sense of humor. The film is whimsically surreal and often laugh-out-loud funny. Although the talent of Lim Soo Jung is certainly not a surprise, it's Rain who raises eyebrows with this role. One of Asia's biggest pop stars, Rain has also found success and popularity as a television actor with dramas like Sang Doo, Let's Go to School and Full House, but the verdict on his acting skills was still open. If anything, I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK proves that with the right guidance Rain can truly become a fine actor, and that Park Chan Wook still has many more surprises under his belt.

5 out of 5 stars another guy chimes in, lOl   August 30, 2008

This was a really, really cute movie. I'm a guy & usually don't like comedies, much less romantic ones, but this one kind of just hit the spot.

I suspect the ladies have more than a passing interest in this movie for Rain, but after seeing Lim Soo Jung in "A Tale of Two Sisters" I have to see her in everything she's done, so that first attracted me to this movie.

I agree with the others, I laughed a lot in places, kind of sniffled my way through some others (shhhh....). What a weird, sweet, fun, tender, and overall cute movie. I guess my overall impression is that it was "cute" but somehow that's a good thing.

So anyway, to add a little to the other reviews, I thought it was a pretty darned good film. Actually it has some great actions scenes (I felt kind of guilty for giggling, actually, but dang, when that cyborg cuts loose, sheeesh!!!), so it's guy-friendly. I loved all the characters, and wouldn't have taken any of them out. I will definitely have to watch this again, there was so much jammed into it, and so many of the other characters had small things going on that I'd like to pay more attention to the next time.

And that kissing scene! I think I held my breath all the way through it. So that's how you do it!

I did notice the Chinese dubbing, that's a shame. I'll definitely keep my eye out for a subbed Korean version.

So yah, this is one I'll be pushing on my friends & family. It's obviously not going to be for everyone, but if you have a quiet evening, feel like some romance laced with a little ultra-violence (humorous that is!) topped with several train loads of nuttiness, then you might just want to give this one a whirl.

Hrrmm, now I feel kinda like it's Ok I'm kinda a nut...

What a great movie! I excepted it to be cute and funny, given the Amazon reviews and the plot description, but I did not expect to be so deeply moved by this bittersweet, beautiful, hilarious movie. Packed full of loopy visuals that reminded me strongly of Michel Gondry's movies but in no way derivative, this film is an absolute joy to watch.

I particularly enjoyed the mental hospital itself. Although Young-goon, the eponymous "cyborg," initially hates the doctors and daydreams about massacring them, she and the audience are eventually won over by the these "white `uns's'" genuine concern and best efforts for the patients. What a change from so many other movies in this setting! The place looks nurturing, secure, and warm- just the place for Young-goon and the handsome loony Il-Sun to fall in love.

To me, this movie could not have been better. Charming, funny, unique, beautiful- it's everything you could possibly want in a film. The protagonist and her love interest have such a sweet and natural chemistry together that it's a delight to watch. I don't listen to Asian pop music much, so I didn't know/care about Rain's pop music career, but he is completely convincing as a sociopath-with-a-heart that you just want to take home.

I cannot sing high enough the praises of this movie. Just buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, quirky film!   January 31, 2008

This is a joy to watch. I laughed so hard and this has got to be my favorite kissing scene ever (and not because it's hot :D). Jung Ji Hoon delivers another scene stealing performance. I don't think I am alone in saying that he is one of those actors who when he is on camera, your eyes follow him. Besides the exceptional acting and the unusual story line (A love story set in a mental hospital) the film itself is beautiful. The colors are vibrant, almost as if they are another character in the film. It is as if even the papers on the cork boards were set up with an eye for aesthetics, color and composition. A wonderful film. One of my absolute favorites!

I collect Korean movies, and I HAD to have this one! Some of my friends don't care for this movie...but I love it. It reminds me of the movie "Benny and Jun" with Johnny Depp.

The story is about two mentally ill patients and their relationship. The girl feels that she is a cyborg and that the only way she can "eat" is by re-charging with batteries and that if she eats something else, she will die. The boy (played by one of the greatest Korean musicians of all time, Rain or "BI" in Korean, real name Jeong Ji-Hoon), is somewhat of a trouble maker at the hospital, but he sets out to help her and he tries to come up with ways to ensure that she starts eating.

Rain (Jeong Ji-Hoon) fits and plays the role perfectly...watch for him to be in the live-action movie of "Speed Racer" coming soon!!!!!

Check out "I'm a Cyborg but that's OK"...very cool movie!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Film!   August 24, 2007

I was shocked to read the one other review for this film. I found this movie to be an absolute work of art. The acting was phenomenal, based around a psychiatric ward and it's patients. The two main characters, one who believes she is a cyborg and the other, an antisocial psychotic (Bi/Jung Ji-Hoon) who "steals" the super powers (i.e. mental illnesses) from the other patients. I have never laughed so hard, Rain is outstanding in both the comedic aspects of the film and the more serious parts. Again, he has the ability to take the viewer from "laugh out loud" funny to tears within a few frames. He even does a yodel song that blows me away. This movie will keep you wondering through out if the main heroine is truly a cyborg or if you are getting a glimpse in the mind of a severely ill patient. The writer and director takes you on a journey that will make you feel what it might be like to be schizophrenic, constantly wondering what is reality and what is not. Outstanding! If you like intellectually challenging films that cause you to ponder them long after then this film is for you. If you are only looking to watch Rain in the sex symbol role then you better pass. He spends a large part of this movie wearing a jump suit, wearing bizarre hats, with horrible hair and picking his butt (no really, I am not kidding!) Yet, he is adorable all the same :) Don't miss it!
