4 out of 5 stars If it ain't broke! Don't fix it!   September 4, 2007
Sylviastel
It's a shame! You know the saying that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Sadly it's true in sitcoms even successful sitcoms like Good Times about the Evans family living in the Chicago projects. The show did a fantastic job in the first two episodes regarding James Evans Sr.'s death and Esther Rolle should have garnered an Emmy Award for her performance especially at the end of the second episode. The loss of John Amos was felt on the cast and crew itself. The show was never again the same as it was with both parents. For some stupid, pathetic reason, the network wanted a single parent household much like other sitcoms like Julia with Diahann Carroll and What's Happening! with Mabel King. Apart from the absence of James Evans Sr., the show went on and the cast and crew did their best to keep this show afloat for a few more seasons. Had they just kept John Amos, you can only imagine what it might have been for the show's future. THe first episode in this season has the family moving to Mississippi with everybody but Michael enthusiastic about the move because he has discovered girls and love. When Florida reads the telegram about her husband's death, it sent chills down my spine. Esther Rolle fought hard to maintain John Amos on the show. She wanted an African American family to have both father and mother. Was it so much to ask for really by network standards? Couldn't they have left the Evans family alone? I still love the show even though I'm white and come from a working middle class New Jersey family. My parents didn't graduate from high school in their country so they had to come here for better opportunities. Sadly, the Evans family should have remained the same. The changes over the season like Bookman who can be annoying but played fine by Johnny Brown, Helen Martin returns, and most of the cast is here. It's not surprising that Esther ROlle left the show at the end of the season.

3 out of 5 stars Good Times was on the rebound following the loss of James.........   January 12, 2007
The Specialist (Parts Unknown)
The fourth season struggles to find it's focus and vision following the loss of John Amos who left the show due to creative differences with the writers and producers. I remember us kids being really upset when they killed him off. If you watch closely you can see the cast being either a step too late or rushing through the scenes. It's also very presumptuous. I recommend the 4th season for die hards and those who want the whole collection.

One good thing happened with the 4th season, Thelma blossomed into a shonuff hot sexy mama!

Key Episodes:
James Death: Damn Damn Damn!!!!
Robert The Ex Football Hero tries to kill himself: JJ puts in one of his best performances trying to save his life.
Thelma gets engaged to Ebai - Classic!

3 out of 5 stars Some Episodes Better Than Others   September 27, 2006

Its times like these that I wish amazon would allow half stars. Good Times was an enjoyble memory on the television while I was growing up. The characters all show a lot of inner strength especially Esther Rolle. However, John Amos was definitely missed. His strong character certainly was a polar opposite of Jimmy Walker and I could certainly see the clashes regarding the direction of the show.

Sometimes the characters were a bit too goofy. And the hold up scene regarding the winning lottery ticket was just not the right mix between serious and comedic. How loopy were those two robbers?

Yet, there is much talent on this screen amongst Esther Rolle, Jimmy Walter, and yes even Janet DuBois, as she is ever so bubbly. I'll likely peruse through one of the earlier seasons to get my fill of John Amos' character as certainly there was more going on with him in the mix.

5 out of 5 stars Dyn-o-mite for Good Times!!   June 30, 2006

I'm 11 Years Old and Proud to Say I Love Good Times, The Way The Show has Characteristics, Problems, Marriage, etc., My Best Characters were Florida, Michael and James. James was The Character who always Understands and was Head of The House and Concerned about his Wife and Children (And May Solve The Problem Violently, if His Kids is Injured), Florida was The Housewife and Cuddly Mother that Gets The Job Done and Michael, The Protest and Activist Brother of J.J. and Thelma , was my Third Favorite Character, who Stands Up His rights Against (After The 70's No One used this Word), The Man.

I Don't Care what Anybody thinks or Says, Good Times is a CBS
Sitcom like The Jeffersons, and All In The Family, To Me, If James (John Amos) was Still alive, I Would love to see Him make a Comeback as The "Original" Head of The Household. I Love The Fourth Season and i Wish They Had A Return of Good Times Every Tuesday, Monday, Friday and Saturday (The Original Episodes that Aired on Those Nights).

During this season, the inevitable happened. James Evans Sr.,portrayed by John Amos, was killed in an automobile accident. Amos was fired from GOOD TIMES in the spring of 1976 after a few offensive comments he made regarding the GT set. Joining the GT cast is Johnny Brown who plays the building superintendent. Brown's character is named Bookman. Bookman might have been mentioned several times in previous seasons.
