Arguably the most talked-about television show of the 2006-2007 season, the Emmy-nominated fantasy Heroes gives viewers blends comic book-style adventure with plotting and characters as rich and layered as any graphic novel or drama series. Creator Tim Kring's premise is deceptively simple - ordinary individuals in locations around the globe discover that they have, for lack of a better term, super powers, and wrestle with this reality while facing challenges both global (the destruction of New York City, for one) and personal (indestructible cheerleader Hayden Panetierre has family issues - serious ones, as the true identity of her adoptive father reveals; Milo Ventimiglia's Peter Petrelli, who absorbs other powers, must overcome his own insecurities). Add to this mix a terrific villain - Zachary Quinto's Sylar, who hunts and kills people with extraordinary powers like our heroes - and viewers have a riveting series that exhibits an almost-perfect balance of cliffhanger thrills (the action and special effects are truly impressive for a network program) and genuine drama that sets the show apart from most speculative fiction (save, perhaps, the revived Battlestar Galactica, which it compares too favorably). The seven-disc set of Heroes: Season One offers a wealth of extras for fans, who may be familiar with some of them through the NBC.com website, especially the cast commentaries, which are featured on half of the episodes. Kring is featured on the 73-minute uncut pilot episode, which for some viewers, may be even better than the network version; the main difference is the degree of character development, including an entire storyline for D.L. Hawkins that isn't featured in the broadcast version. Also on deck are some 50 deleted scenes from the episodes, several by-the-books making-of featurettes, including coverage of the special effects and stunt work, and a profile of artist Tim Sale, whose illustrations are used for Isaac Mendez's prophetic artwork. Prospective buyers should note that while all of these supplemental features are included on the HD-DVD version of this set, the special Web-connectivity elements are not available here. -- Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Series   November 22, 2008
D. Baer (Mesa, AZ USA)
I will start by saying that I am biased -- I liked comic books as a kids, watched all sorts of cartoons on Saturday mornings, and dressed up as various heroes for Halloween. Obviously, I enjoyed this season of Heroes quite a bit.

My wife, on the other hand, has no such predispositons and generally does NOT enjoy anything superhero, science fiction or computer-related. We heard a lot about the show, but did not watch it until we purchased the DVD set -- then we watched the episodes three or four at a time. The story is just that good. (We would have watched more, but we have jobs, kids, and other responsibiliies)

If you don't buy it, rent it... in this case, the show is worth the hype.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Service   November 10, 2008
Judy A. Nicewicz (Avon Park, Fl.)
I was extremely pleased with the fast and efficient service. My DVD arrived at it's destination quickly. I would definitely order from them again.

2 out of 5 stars A Matter of Opinion   November 8, 2008
David K. Gervais (Citronelle, Al United States)
I watched the first episode of Heroes, and while it was well made with very good acting, I came away with a less than positive view of this program. The producers seem to strongly promote the theory of evolution, mildly promote teen suicidal attempts, etc. In general, if you're looking for a good sci-fi with high morals, and some family values more like Smallville promotes, you might would rather watch, well... Smallville. I'm selling my Heroes set.

5 out of 5 stars heros series 1   November 5, 2008
Becki Shipe Davis (goleta, ca United States)
what more can you say????????? great show, great service. thanks so much. would highly reccomend.

5 out of 5 stars Heroes - Season One   November 3, 2008
kurbee (Frankston, TX USA)
For those like me who missed episodes, had gaps from interruptions or had failing attention, Heroes 1st season is a pleasant reintroduction to the beginning of the Heroes series. I haven't seen a quality sci-fi program that wasn't worthwhile seeing again, and you usually find elements not seen the first time.

A DVD set, obviously, provides a very good long term storage system for quality video images and stereo sound. And it's a far better storage system than VHS tape. Technology is always marching on, and DVD is safe for 5-10 years. Most advances are incremental steps; choose your shots well.

So, I'll be getting the additional years/ seasons as they are available.
